A depressed Iraqi's reflections on some great quotes

There are many lovely quotes out there, but these are much more wiserthan to be considered ‘just lovely’. I’ve commented on some of them, but unfortunately not at one of my best moments.

I do fear that when any new Iraqi government tries to follow up and catch terrorists or any of those whom it thinks are a source of threat, the government will reach a point where it will follow the same techniques that Saddam did in stopping those opposing him.

- If at any point in time, I will say that the situation in Iraq has reached a point that it is beyond repair, please remind me of this quote.

Despite all this, I still believe that in two years time, Iraq ‘will start to see some improvement and will start the rebuilding process. What I am worried about is the next couple of years till this starts happening.

Based on the events over the past few weeks, I'm personally quite optimistic as to what Iraq will evolve to. Consider these points:

1. The recent election, while it was admittedly not flawless, had a better turnout and less problems than typical elections in the United States and other established democracies. A surprisingly good start.

2. After the new government takes power, it will rob the insurgents of most of the legitimacy they currently possess. Hopefully some of them will see things going in a positive direction, put their guns away, and go home. This process will also make it harder for the die-hard insurgents and foreign terrorists to hide, making it easier to arrest them.

3. Once the violence ebbs, the US troops will go back to their bases, and eventually go home.

4. Once the violence stops, it will become more possible to improve infrastructure (roads, telephones, electrical, etc.), the condition of which are likely impairing the Iraqi economy at present.

5. If all these things fall into place, Iraq will be in good shape: a stable democracy, rich in natural resources, and with a highly educated populace. In short, a fertile land for foreign investment. If you get big companies pumping money into Iraq and creating jobs, it would create ripples to other areas of the economy (services businesses, hotels, stores, restaurants, etc.)

Obviously, there are a few hurdles that still need to be cleared before this scenario could play out, but based on the events in the past few weeks, I think it is quite plausible.

I know this one sounds trite, and I do not know who originally said it, but it goes something like this:

"Life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you react".

Obviously, you feel that nothing very good has happened to you in Iraq recently. But that is only 10% of the whole. What you do with the new opportunities that will be coming in Iraq is up to you. I know that you fight hard to see the bright side of things, and being pessimistic doesn't come easily to you. So look around you and start examining what you have to be thankful for.

You don't live in Iran. Iraqthemodel had a great link to a story of what is happening to bloggers in Iran.

At least you don't live in Egypt, where the people are hoping against all odds for a chance to vote for somebody other than who is already in power. Your country just had one election with 7600 potential candidates, and will have a least one more in the not to distant future.

At least you don't still live under Saddam, where this blog might have already earned you a visit from his secret police.

At least you don't live in Saudi Arabia, where the religious police would force you to conform to their beliefs under penalty of law.

At least you don't live in America, where doctors are routinely sued by their patients because we have an out of control legal system that allows the lawyers to make big money off of such lawsuits.

Okay then, here we go:
As we all know the Dutch troups are moving out of Iraq, as was agreed earlier. But, 'we' Dutch would have all the reason to behave as 'we' did in earlier times: occupying some countries in east, west, and south and just tell everywhere around that we 'discovered' them.
Yes, it is true, indeed we do need land because we are among the ones that will really suffer the climate change, that lately and greatly was rediscovered as: 'Coming to you soon!'.
The Netherlands is below the sea level, and will for big parts disappear under the water. Within one generation they said. Yesyestheydid! We are also a bit dense populated country. We need land!! But what do we do?
We leave Iraq. We have no plans (agenda: no no wrong word) to occupy the USofA while they have lots of that 'blessed' stuff. And instead of keeping or retaking the former colonies Suriname and/or The Dutch Antillees, the policy is to tell these countries to back-off and cut connections.
Have they -the politicians- been drugged or what?
So yep. I guess i am right if i think we learned again nothing and we will once again end up creating some sandy-land in the sea, once again according to the Dutch saying: 'God created the world, but the Dutch created their land'.; March 2, 2005 at 3:13 AM

Please try to remember that there is always two sides to the same situation. An intelligent person considers both before coming to his conclusion.

The soldiers at that check point had a car approaching at a very high rate of speed. They attempted to warn the driver to stop by using hand and arm signals, flashing white lights and firing warning shots in front of the car. Insurgents regularly detonate roadside bombs and shoot at military and civilian vehicles along that five-mile road. American soldiers across Iraq are wary of speeding cars approaching checkpoints or convoys. How are they supposed to differentiate between a suicide bomber, and a rescue force that wears civilian clothes, unmarked cars and ignores warnings? My only problems is that I was never good at picking teams or games.
